Bio: A Little about me

  • I'm a web designer: I maintain a few other web sites, including:
    RASC-KC (The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Kingston Centre) 1995-2002,
    Almost Home (a Kingston based Charity) 2000-2007
    and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada 2001 October - 2006 May.
  • I'm an amateur astronomer
  • a member of the Planetary Society from the mid 1980's to 2006 (fees too high, not enough member benefits) and again from 2007- (good multi year deal).
  • a member of the National Space Society from 1981-2002 (their fees got too high with not enough benefits for the member)
  • an observer of variable stars for the AAVSO with observer initials of kkl
  • I've been on the Executive Council of the RASC-KC from 1994-2003 and 2005-, editor of the RASC-KC newsletter from 1996 to 2003 and editor and publisher of the books:
    Careers in Space (1998), Expanding Their Universe (1999), Worlds to Discover (2000) and Expanding Their Universe 2nd Edition (2002)
  • I'm an Information Technology Professional, working in the Department of Pathology at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario Canada, since 1990.
  • I've been a Candian Forces Reservist from 1989 to 1994 with the Reserve Electronic Warfare Unit, CFB Kingston, as an RTOP (Radio-Teletype OPerator). This included courses in Winter Survival, small arms, intelligence and many practical exercises.

  • 2005: Appointed to the Queen's University Campus Grounds Advisory Committee as a QUSA representative
  • 1990 - something - I Served a year on the QUSA membership and promotion committee.

    Awards

  • 2006 Received the RASC Service Award, a major award of the Society given to a member in recognition of outstanding service, rendered over an extended period of time, where such service has had a major impact on the work of the Society and/or of a Centre of the Society.
  • 2003 Received the RASC Messier Certificate, awarded to RASC members who observe all 110 objects on the Messier list as published annually in the RASC Observer's Handbook
  • 1998 Received the RASC Membership Certificate, a minor award given to an RASC member as a polite, public "thank you" in recognition for service rendered that has significantly contributed to the work of the Society and/or a Centre of the Society. The Certificate is given only by resolution of the National Council and shall normally be presented at the annual meeting of the Society or the Centre as appropriate.
  • 1996 Received the A. Vibert Douglas Award of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Kingston Centre, is the centre's highest honour and is bestowed upon members who have made a significant contribution to the Kingston Centre or to Astronomy and its sister sciences.
